Seeds storage

Idealy seeds should not be stored and once ripened (collected), it should be sown instantly, as it happenes in nature. Nothing is ideal, therefore we need to deal with storage methods. And in case of this cattalogue there is no other way. First question was how to deliver seeds to you in the best shape. I have gained inspiration at the seed banks, where seed genofond is kept for future genarations. I have introduced a similar, but considerably modest system many years ago, with very good results. So today, after a special treatment, a large part of seeds are stored in freezers at -18 °C. This ensures their viability for several decades. Stored seeds are regulary tested for its germination, with a very good results. Some of those seeds after number of years of storage germinates even better than fresh. Many species could not be even offered for sale without such a storage method. In the temperate climate zone are only few plant species for which such a method of storage is inappropriate. These are mostly tree species, such as Quercus, and other pulpy seeds. Even closer to the equator, number of those species suitable for this technique decreases rapidly. Predominantly pulpy seeds from warm (tropical) area can be stored in a refrigerator for +5 °C for some time. This is also a good way for a short-term storage of species from cold areas. Most of those seeds retain its germination for 1-3 years, some even much longer. So, for a short-term storage, the refrigerator is the best possible place. Although, seeds should be well cleaned, dried and sealed in container before refrigeration, for example in a plastic bag.
